Restaurants in Brighton East Sussex
Terre à Terre 71 East Street (01273 729051)
This upmarket vegetarian restaurant prides
itself on appealing as much to carnivores as it does to
vegetarians and even after a recent refurbishment to increase
the size of the restaurant in an attempt to cope with demand,
it is still a good idea to book a table rather than just
turning up on the night. At Terre à Terre they have avoided
the obvious veggie dishes in favour of inspired combinations
using organic ingredients to tickle your taste buds. Highly
recommended choices include split pea pikelets with mint pesto
and the Camembert soufflé with sage fritters. The beers,
wines and spirits are also organic with some pretty superb and
good value wines in particular.
Casa Don Carlos 5 Union Street, The Lanes (01273 327177)
This great little tapas restaurant, hidden
away in The Lanes, is well worth tracking down. The restaurant
is only small so it’s a good idea to book ahead especially
during the summer months when diners can eat outside. The menu
is classic Spanish tapas with the likes of tortilla, chorizo
sausage and a generous portion of prawns in garlic. They also
serve wonderful paella that is the perfect accompaniment to
their highly potent Sangria, giving you a real taste of Spain.
Black Chapati 12 Circus Parade, New England Road (01273
699011)
What the Black Chapati lacks in location and
décor it more than makes up for with its exceptionally good
South East Asian cuisine. Eating here is not cheap but most of
the diners agree that such carefully prepared and
well-presented food is worth paying that bit extra for. Dishes
worthy of a special mention include the succulent lamb
patties, the grilled five spice duck breast and the memorable
steamed guinea fowl in rice wine sauce, served with perfectly
cooked Chinese cabbage and melt in the mouth dumplings.
Food For Friends 17 Prince Albert Street (01273 202310)
Food For Friends is the kind of place that
attracts everyone, its relaxed enough to take the kids and it’s
great value so both students and pensioners love it. The food
is vegetarian offering an interesting selection of daily
changing hot dishes including the likes of pastas and
stir-fries as well as a choice of interesting salads.
Gingerman 21A Norfolk Square (01273 326688)
For the full on gourmet experience the best
place in Brighton is undoubtedly Gingerman. The decision has
been taken to limit the options available on the menu and to
concentrate on the quality, a tactic that seems to work rather
well. So at lunch you are limited to two choices of starter
and two main courses, while at dinner the options go up to six
for both courses. The cooking is modern European and changes
on a regular basis but you can expect to find culinary wonders
such as roast venison, served with Savoy cabbage and oh so
creamy potato gratin and desserts include a decadent hot
chocolate fondant.
